Siding problems are quiet until they aren't. Here's what to look for while a repair is still cheaper than a replacement.

Siding damage rarely announces itself.

Unlike a roof leak, failing siding doesn't usually show up as a dramatic, obvious problem. It shows up as a slightly soft spot near a window, a faint musty smell in a closet on an exterior wall, or paint that won't hold anymore no matter how many times you repaint it.

By the time most homeowners call us about siding, moisture has already gotten behind it. Here's how to catch the signs earlier.

Early warning signs worth checking for.

These are the things we look for first during a siding assessment, and most of them are visible from the ground with a careful walk around the house.

  • Warping, bubbling, or buckling panels
  • Cracks or gaps at seams and corners
  • Paint that peels or blisters repeatedly in the same spots
  • Soft or spongy areas when pressed gently
  • Visible mold, mildew, or discoloration

If siding feels soft under light pressure, there's a good chance moisture has already reached the sheathing behind it.

What's happening behind the surface.

Siding is your home's primary barrier against wind-driven rain, and once its seal is compromised, the damage tends to spread quietly behind the wall before it's visible from outside.

  • Trapped moisture can rot wall sheathing and framing
  • Insulation loses effectiveness when it gets wet
  • Pest activity increases in damp, damaged wall cavities
  • Energy bills often creep up as insulation performance drops
  • Repair costs grow quickly once framing is involved

Catching it early keeps it simple.

Most siding issues we catch early are a straightforward panel repair or a resealing job. The ones that turn into major projects are almost always the ones that sat unaddressed for a year or two.

If anything on this list looks familiar, it's worth a quick inspection. We'll tell you plainly whether it's a minor fix or something more, with photos so you can see exactly what we see.
